Decimal, Fractional & American Odds Explained
Understanding Odds Formats
Odds tell you two things: the probability of an outcome and how much you will win. There are three main formats used worldwide.
Decimal Odds (Most Common in Africa)
Decimal odds show your total return per unit staked. Example: Odds of 2.50 mean a R100 bet returns R250 (R100 stake + R150 profit).
Formula: Payout = Stake × Odds
Fractional Odds (UK Style)
Shown as fractions like 3/1 (“three to one”). This means you win 3 units for every 1 unit staked. 3/1 in decimal = 4.00.
American Odds
Positive numbers (+200) show profit on a $100 bet. Negative numbers (-150) show how much you need to bet to win $100. Less common in Africa.
Converting Between Formats
- Fractional 3/1 = Decimal 4.00 = American +300
- Fractional 1/2 = Decimal 1.50 = American -200
- Fractional 6/4 = Decimal 2.50 = American +150
Implied Probability
Formula: Probability = 1 ÷ Decimal Odds × 100
Odds of 2.00 = 50% implied probability. Odds of 4.00 = 25%. The lower the odds, the more likely the bookmaker thinks it will happen.
