Setting a Betting Budget You Can Stick To

Your Betting Budget

The single most important skill in betting is managing your money. Without a budget, even the best tipster will go broke.

Step 1: Define Your Bankroll

Your bankroll is the total amount of money you set aside exclusively for betting. This must be money you can 100% afford to lose. Never use rent money, school fees, or emergency funds.

Step 2: Set Your Unit Size

A “unit” is your standard bet size. The recommended unit size is 1-3% of your total bankroll.

  • Bankroll: R1,000 → Unit: R10-30
  • Bankroll: KES 10,000 → Unit: KES 100-300
  • Bankroll: NGN 50,000 → Unit: NGN 500-1,500

Step 3: Never Chase Losses

If you lose 5 bets in a row, do NOT double your next bet to “win it back.” This is called the Gambler’s Fallacy and it destroys bankrolls faster than anything else.

Step 4: Track Everything

Keep a simple spreadsheet: Date, Match, Market, Odds, Stake, Result, Profit/Loss. After 100 bets, you will see patterns in your betting that help you improve.
