Handicap Betting & Correct Score Markets
Handicap Betting and Correct Score Markets
← Back to SoccerBetPrediction Home
Handicap Betting & Correct Score refers to four markets that carry higher odds than a basic 1X2 bet, and reward the punter who understands them precisely: Asian handicap, European handicap, correct score, and half-time/full-time. This lesson covers all four.
If you have not yet covered the fundamentals, work through match winner, double chance and draw no bet and over/under goals and both teams to score first. Everything below assumes you can already read decimal odds.
Handicap Betting & Correct Score: Asian Handicap Explained
Key points:
- Removes the draw by giving one team a virtual goal head start
- Uses whole, half and quarter goal lines
- Whole goal lines can be voided, with your stake refunded
- Margins are usually tighter than 1X2, so the value is often better
Half goal lines (-0.5, -1.5, -2.5)
There is no refund. The result is a clean win or loss.
- Arsenal -1.5: Arsenal must win by two or more goals. A 1-0 win loses.
- Arsenal +1.5: Arsenal can lose by one goal and the bet still wins.
Whole goal lines (-1, -2)
The handicap is applied to the final score. If that adjusted score is level, the bet is void and your stake is returned.
- Arsenal -1 and Arsenal win 3-1: adjusted score 2-1, bet wins.
- Arsenal -1 and Arsenal win 1-0: adjusted score 0-0, stake refunded.
- Arsenal -1 and the match ends 1-1: bet loses.
Quarter goal lines (-0.25, -0.75, +1.25)
Your stake is split evenly across the two nearest lines. A -0.75 line puts half your stake on -0.5 and half on -1. That creates half wins and half losses rather than all or nothing outcomes.
European Handicap
Key points:
- Whole numbers only, never half or quarter goals
- Three outcomes: home, draw, away, all after the handicap is applied
- Never voids and never refunds
- Odds are higher than the equivalent Asian line because the refund safety net is gone
Arsenal -1 in the European market means the match starts at 0-1 on the scoreboard in your bet.
- Arsenal win 3-1: adjusted 2-1, your bet wins.
- Arsenal win 1-0: adjusted 0-0, the handicap draw wins and your Arsenal selection loses.
- Arsenal draw or lose: your bet loses.
That single difference is the one most punters get wrong. On the same fixture and the same -1 line, a one goal win refunds you in the Asian market and loses your stake in the European market.
Where the handicap draw fits
Because European handicap keeps the draw as a selectable outcome, you can back it directly. Backing the handicap draw at Arsenal -1 is a bet that Arsenal win by exactly one goal. It is a compact way to price a narrow home win without touching correct score odds.
Asian vs European Handicap
The two markets apply the same handicap number to very different effect, and the table below is the fastest way to see where they diverge.
| Feature | Asian Handicap | European Handicap |
|---|---|---|
| Line increments | Whole, half, quarter | Whole numbers only |
| Possible outcomes | Two | Three |
| Refunds | Yes, on level whole goal lines | Never |
| Typical odds | Lower | Higher |
| Best suited to | Risk control and value hunting | Backing a specific winning margin |
The practical rule of thumb: reach for Asian handicap when you want the refund safety net on a close scoreline, and reach for European handicap when you specifically want to price a narrow winning margin, including backing the handicap draw outright.
Correct Score
Key points:
- You predict the exact final score
- Odds commonly run from around 6.00 on the likeliest scorelines to 50.00 and beyond on unlikely ones
- Strike rates are low, so stake sizing matters more here than in any other market
The most frequently occurring football scorelines are 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-0 and 0-0. These carry the shortest correct score odds precisely because they land most often — see Footystats for real correct-score frequency data by team and league if you want to check a specific fixture rather than rely on the general pattern.
Practical approach:
- Use the over/under market to set your goal expectation first, then narrow to two or three scorelines inside that range.
- Cover multiple scorelines on the same match rather than staking everything on one. Three selections at 8.00 to 12.00 is usually a better structure than one at 9.00.
- Check team news before committing. A missing first choice striker shifts the entire score distribution. Our lesson on pre-match research, form, H2H and team news covers the workflow.
- Keep correct score stakes small. This is a market for occasional value, not a core strategy.
Half-Time/Full-Time
Key points:
- Two predictions in one bet: the result at half-time and the result at full-time
- Nine possible combinations
- Odds are high because both legs must be correct
| Selection | What Must Happen |
|---|---|
| Home/Home | Home team leads at HT and wins at FT |
| Home/Draw | Home leads at HT, match ends level |
| Home/Away | Home leads at HT, away team wins |
| Draw/Home | Level at HT, home team wins |
| Draw/Draw | Level at HT and FT |
| Draw/Away | Level at HT, away team wins |
| Away/Home | Away leads at HT, home team wins |
| Away/Draw | Away leads at HT, match ends level |
| Away/Away | Away leads at HT and wins |
The Draw/Home and Draw/Away combinations are the most useful in practice. Strong favourites frequently need the second half to break down a packed defence, and backing Draw/Home on a dominant home side often pays two to three times the price of a straight home win.
The comeback options, Home/Away and Away/Home, carry the longest odds of the nine and land rarely. Treat them as speculative.
What Mistakes Should You Avoid in Handicap Betting?
- Assuming a European -1 behaves like an Asian -1. It does not, and the difference costs you your stake on a one goal win.
- Chasing correct score odds without controlling stake size. Apply a proper staking plan, covered in staking plans: flat, percentage and Kelly criterion.
- Ignoring the bookmaker margin. Handicap markets are usually priced tighter than 1X2, which is exactly why they are worth learning. See how bookmakers set odds and the margin.
- Misreading how a handicap line displays on the slip. Confirm the selection before you confirm the bet, as covered in reading a bet slip like a pro.
